The success of Unity Day was evident in the sea of orange at Touchet Schools today! To add to its excitement, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will have the opportunity to choose their very own orange pumpkins at the Shulke Pumpkin Patch tomorrow. Not only will they have a fun time, but their visit will also contribute to a great cause. The pumpkin patch raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House in memory of Cooper, and their donations help make a difference in the lives of families in need.

This week's Teacher Spotlight is Ms. Jackie Helm! Did you know that Ms. Helm is in charge of collecting Box Tops for our school? On the Box Tops website, it says that Touchet School has a lifetime earnings of $7,349.55. However, this is not the actual amount we have collected over the years! It's actually much higher than that since that's the amount they've only been able to track. We've been able to use the money we've earned for a lot of great things like buying new playground equipment, a portion of our playground structure, and even 25 Chromebooks for our students to use! Collecting Box Tops has never been easier! All you have to do is download the Box Tops app to your phone, where you can simply scan the barcode and receipt. It's that simple! For more information, you can visit the Box Tops website @ https://www.boxtops4education.com/s/ Here are a few amazing facts about Ms. Helm you might not have known! This is my 32nd year of teaching, all at Touchet School. I started out as a Librarian, then taught Kindergarten before moving to 2nd grade. I grew up nearby in Waitsburg. I went to Walla Walla Community College and then transferred to Eastern Washington University. My favorite thing about teaching is helping students learn. It is so rewarding to see children’s faces light up and hear the excitement in their voices when they master something that has been a challenge for them. Getting to be with children all day is a treasure for me. Each day brings new challenges and rewards. My favorite hobbies are knitting, walking, and watching sports (Green Bay Packers, Seattle Mariners, and Touchet teams) I also enjoy playing volleyball. Thank You Ms. Helm for everything you do for our students and community. It's wonderful to see the impact that collecting Box Tops has had on our school, and your dedication to teaching is truly inspiring.

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow is Unity Day and we encourage everyone to wear orange to show unity across the school. This event perfectly aligns with our Kindness Club's mission to create a safe and enjoyable learning environment in Touchet by performing random acts of kindness for others. Speaking of which, have you heard about our Kindness Club? Our school currently has 47 students signed up for it and we are actively working towards making our school a better place by performing random acts of kindness for others. Every Thursday, the Kindness Club meets with Mrs. Tobin during morning recess to determine the acts of kindness to be performed for the week. This week, we are planning to write letters to our custodians and join the PTO in giving them treats to show our appreciation for Custodian Appreciation Week!

SAM - SAFETY ALWAYS MATTERS! Touchet students had a valuable opportunity to learn about fire safety from local firefighters this week. The firefighters visited the school and taught the kids what to do in case of an emergency, including how to navigate through a house in the event of a fire, and how to use a fire extinguisher. The children gained valuable knowledge on how to keep themselves and their families safe and were reminded that SAM - Safety Always Matters!

Our 9th and 10th-grade students have been having fun in the lab. During a recent science experiment, they learned about cellular respiration, and how yeast converts glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide, which then blows up the balloon when it is trapped! What a great way to learn about this important biological process, and fun for the kids to have this hands-on experiment!

THANK YOU Touchet Redhawk Coaches! Coaches play a crucial role in shaping the lives of young people. They not only teach them the skills and strategies needed to succeed in their respective sports, but also instill important values such as teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship. By serving as positive role models and mentors, coaches have a lasting impact on the lives of their athletes. It is important to recognize the time commitment coaches make, whether it's in the middle of the season during intense gameplay, or in the off-season helping players grow and develop game strategies. The dedication and hard work our coaches put in does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for all that they do for us. Thank you for all you do for our Redhawk Athletes! GO REDHAWKS!

Today, third graders began working on their VFW Essay Contest entries .  Our student teacher, Ms. Weger, is leading the unit.  The children learned all about what it means to be a veteran. They brainstormed ideas, listened to a story, and worked collaboratively in teams to get ideas for their writing.  They will continue working on this project a couple days each week throughout October.  Their final drafts are due at the VFW post in Walla Walla on November 1!  Winners will be announced in February.   It’s a great day to be a third grader at Touchet Elementary!!
